What is iTunes?

what is itunes?
iTunes is an app developed in Apple. It acts as a media library and player by allowing the user to either import existing (physical) media such as CDs and DVDs or buy and download digital media from the iTunes store (which is of course owned by Apple).

While there is something of a steep learning curve, I find iTunes to be a convenient way to organize digital media once you get used to it.

How to import a CD into iTunes

If you are a music aficionado who still owns physical music media, you probably have CDs you would like to import into your iTunes music library. You want to digitize your music collection, but re-buying all those CDs through the iTunes store does not seem to be a good use of your money when you already own the CD.

How do you do import a CD into iTunes, though? All you need is the CD of your choice and a USB CD/DVD reader. Especially if you don't mind an off-brand CD reader, they are cheap (under $30). It is absolutely worth the price if you have a large CD collection to import.

Plug in your reader via USB to your Mac, then open the reader to insert your CD. When you are ready, close the reader and wait a moment for your Mac to read the CD's contents. A window will pop up asking about importing your CD. Select the Yes button to begin importing your CD.

As it is imported, each song will gain a green checkmark. When the album is completely imported, all the songs will be checked.

Once your CDs have been digitized and added to iTunes, there is still the issue of what to do when iTunes can't find the album artwork.

If you have not noticed yet, iTunes has a nasty habit of recognizing only those albums which are purchased through iTunes. Once you import your CD and attempt to Get Album Artwork, an error message will appear: Artwork for XXX could not be found. Now what?

How to create an iTunes playlist

how to create a playlist in iTunes I am the sort of person who gets OCD about playing an entire block of albums by a particular artist or group. The problem with this is that iTunes starts by playing the first song on the first album and continuing along until the entire list of albums by that artist is finished, which will be in the order they were imported rather than your preferred order.

I find that it is better to set up a series of playlists to sort music by artist, group, or theme. This way, iTunes is ready to go with whatever type of music is desired at that particular moment.

Tip: If done correctly, you can even use iTunes to emulate a white noise generator by setting up a playlist of your favourite white noise or nature sounds.

How to sync your iPod Shuffle with iTunes

The iPod Shuffle is unquestionably Apple's most successful MP3 player. It was designed as a small, lightweight MP3 player intended to play random music during exercise. It has indeed fulfilled its original creation goal in becoming a common exercise accessory. The Shuffle can easily be clipped to a pocket for security. It adds some variety to one's day, yet is light enough to carry along while jogging.

It is presently in its fourth generation (2GB capacity), and is still currently available for sale in several colour options including the lovely chartreuse Green one. It weighs .44 oz, and has an expected battery life of 15 hours once it has been fully charged. The music contained therein can be accessed with a set of earbuds which plug into the device.

If you have purchased an iPod Shuffle, you will want to sync it with your Apple computer to transfer music. An iPod is designed to sync with iTunes rather than the Cloud. Each iPod comes with a special USB cable that can sync with an Apple computer. You can then use the iTunes program on your computer to copy music to your iPod from your computer.

sync your ipod shuffle Start up iTunes on your computer as usual. Once it is opened, plug the "earplug" end of the USB cable into the matching port on your iPod, then plug the "port" end of the USB cable into the matching port on your computer. There are usually several ports of the correct size for that end of the cable. If this is your first time to sync with your computer, you will be prompted to set up your new iPod as you would normally do for an Apple device.

sync your ipod shuffle Select your sync options. Any action you do not want to perform at each sync should be unchecked.

Once your iPod has been set up, you should see the main "screen" for your iPod. If you have the lefthand menu enabled in iTunes, your device should now show on this menu. Click on your iPod's name to open the sub-tabs.

Adding your own music

sync your ipod shuffle The first tab in iTunes is Music. Click it. Several options will then be available:

Once your selections are made, click Apply (at the bottom right of the iTunes screen). It may take several minutes for everything to transfer over.

You can also drag-and-drop individual items from your iTunes library to your iPod Shuffle. This is a useful option if you particularly enjoy the randomness of Shuffle music play.
